Timeline for Jay Gatsby

I decided to do exactly what Jay Gatsby once said, “Can’t repeat the past? Why of course you can!" With the theme of time in The Great Gatsby, I thought it would be appropriate to create a timeline, and “repeat the past”. I decided to base the timeline only around Jay Gatsby due to his personal infatuation with the past. On the timeline I documented the situations and events that had an affect on Gatsby.

Within the creation of this piece I realized how truly obsessed Gatsby was with Daisy by observing the period between their first meeting and Gatsby's own death. Within that time we find Gatsby risk prison life to bootleg not just for money, but for the money that will catch Daisy's eye. We also see Daisy get married, not to Gatsby, but Tom, which to a normal guy would bring an end to an obsession like this. Lastly, Gatsby’s affair with Daisy is revealed, and Daisy still goes off with Tom, destroying Gatsby dream. I have created here quite a dramatic line of love.

My inspiration for this piece did come directly from Gatsby's quote, "Can't repeat the past? Why of course you can!" along with overall concept of time in the novel. I noted important events by using summaries of chapters and looking into the years these events occured.
